Intent:
Our History curriculum is designed to develop a curiosity and fascination about the past that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.
Our philosophy is that children should:
- build an extensive base of historical knowledge and vocabulary.
- foster a genuine interest in the subject and a real sense of curiosity about the past gaining a chronological awareness.
- be taught History through a values based approach where possible.
- learn through exploration and enquiry.
- explore how people lived; looking for similarities and differences between different historical periods.
- learn about the past, thinking about the effect it has had and considering how it shapes the world we live in today.
Implementation:
History is taught throughout our Learning Experiences showing a progression of skills across the school. It is intertwined with other areas of the curriculum to inspire children’s curiosity and develop their skills and knowledge.
For each learning experience, a knowledge organiser which outlines knowledge (including vocabulary) is produced. All children will master and apply this knowledge through the learning experience.
Impact:
What we expect you to see:
- happy and engaged learners.
- an engaging hook at the beginning and a purposeful, authentic outcome to finish.
- children exploring and handling artefacts, going on educational visits or welcoming visitors.
- discussions and questioning around different History topics.
- subject specific vocabulary taught and displayed for reference.
